Mohamed Hichem KARA is Professor at the University of Annaba in Algeria since 2003. Holder of a Doctorate in Biological Oceanography from Houari Boumediène University of Sciences and Technologies of Algiers in 1998,
Its teaching and research activities are oriented towards marine and continental hydrobiology, with a special interest in biodiversity, fisheries, aquaculture and their interactions with human activities (pollution, invasive species and climate change). In 2003, he founded the Marine Bioresources laboratory. His research team participated in 15 international programs (Tassili, PHC Maghreb, AUF, CNRS-PICS, EU-FP7, US-AID, Envi-Med, Amidex, Key initiative Muse, COST), 11 of which as project manager.
He published 95 scientific articles in refereed journals (h-index = 16, RG score= 34.15), in addition to 3 book chapters. His latest book, in 4 volumes published in 2020, is devoted to Mediterranean lagoons and estuaries and their fish.
Mohamed Hichem Kara worked as an expert with international institutions (AUF, FAO, UNEP/MAP, IUCN, EU) and contributed to the establishment of thematic networks at national (RASMER), Maghreb (AMSMER, MAGHLAG) and international (CGPM-MSHP) levels.
He is admitted in 2015 to the Algerian Academy of Science and Technology (AAST) as a founding member, of which he is currently the Vice-President. He is Co-President of the Living Resources and Marine Ecosystems Committee of the CIESM (the Mediterranean Science Commission), member of the Pan-African Scientific Research Council as inaugural fellow and elected Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences in 2021.
