Mohamed Hichem Kara , born on December 25 in Annaba , holder of a PhD in biological oceanography from the Houari Boumediene University of Science and Technology in Algiers in 1998, he was promoted to Professor of Higher Education at the University of Annaba in 2003.His teaching and research activities are based on marine and continental hydrobiology, with a particular focus on biodiversity, fisheries, aquaculture and their interactions with anthropogenic activities (pollution, invasive species and climate change).In 2003, he founded and leads the Bioressources Marines research laboratory. His research team has contributed to 15 international programs (PHC, AUF, CNRS-PICS, EU-FP7, US-AID, Envi-Med, Amidex, Key initiative, COST) of which he presided eleven.He has published over 100 scientific articles in specialized journals, including book chapters.His latest 4volume work, released in 2019, is devoted to the lagoons and estuaries of the Mediterranean and their ichthyological populations.
In conjunction to his scientific and administrative responsibilities at the University, he is a member of numerous national scientific councils and an expert with international institutions such as AUF, FAO, UNEP/MAP, IUCN and the EU.He has participated in the creation of several thematic scientific networks at national, Maghreb and international level. He is a jury member for the prize of president of the Republic for science .
And welcomed to the Algerian Academy of Science and Technology (AAST) as a founding member in 2015, he was Vice-President from 2015 to 2023 and was elected President in November 2023. Internationally, he is co-chairman of the Marine Ecosystems and Living Resources Committee of the International Commission for the Scientific Exploration of the Mediterranean (CIESM).He joined the Pan-African Scientific Research Council as a founding member in 2021. In 2022, he was chosen as a perpetual member of the African Academy of Sciences in the Biosciences discipline.
